Tech @ Tamaki Hard Materials - Wood Joints

Here are some useful ways of joining wooden pieces together that are used In woodwork and carpentry.

1. Housing joint.

a) Find a clear picture of this joint and insert it here.

b) What are housing joints most commonly used for? Book Case/Shelves

c) Are there different kinds of housing joints?   Can you include pictures of them?

d) Can you find a housing joint anywhere in your house? My drawer

2. Mitre joint.

a) Find a clear picture of this joint and insert it here.

b) What are mitre joints most commonly used for? Picture frames or Boards

c) Mitre joints are not very strong, how can they be made stronger? Maybe putting glue to make it stick together or probably nailing it together.

d) Can you find a mitre joint anywhere in your house? Picture frame

3. Finger joint.  (Also commonly called a Box Joint)

a) Find a clear picture of this joint and insert it here.

b) What are finger joints most commonly used for? They are made for drawers.

c) What makes the finger joint so strong? It looks like fingers (but wood) and when you push them together they are strong like when you put your fingers together to make a finger lock (or joint).

d) Can you find a finger joint anywhere in your house? My drawer

4. Halving joint.

a) Find a clear picture of this joint and insert it here.

b) What are halving joints most commonly used for? A halving joint is used to fix together two pieces of timber. They kind of overlap.

c) What makes the halving joint so strong? They are really thick?

d) Can you find a halving joint anywhere in your house? (still thinking and searching)

5. Mortise and Tenon joint.

a) Find a clear picture of this joint and insert it here.

b) What are Mortise and Tenon joints most commonly used for? Tables,Chairs,Windows, and other furniture.

c) What makes the Mortise and Tenon joint so strong? Because of its fitting and flushing size. The 2 tenons are right next to each other and fit into each other which makes it stronger.

d) Can you find a Mortise and Tenon joint anywhere in your house? Furniture in my house

Hello everyone, it's me Finau and welcome back to my blog! Today I went to my Hard Materials Tech @ Tamaki meet. We learnt about different kinds of Wood joints. I hope you have enjoyed this post. Please leave a positive comment on my blog. Bye!

Tech @ Tamaki Hard Materials - Tool Safety

1. Consider the hand tools that you may use in the woodwork shop.

*Bench hook,saw,chisel,

2. Consider how they are used accurately and safely.

*You can use a saw to cut something in half with your hands/grip. You can also use a chisel to level something and make it the right length. You have to hit it on the wood.

3. How should they be stored to be sure that they are in good condition?

*Put them in a draw or tray so they don’t get wrecked or anything like that.

4. Think about the way we should behave in a busy workshop to keep safe.

*You should walk slowly (if you are walking), do not disturb anyone if they are using a tool in case they get hurt, don’t be silly with the tools and play around with them.

5. Can you imagine a situation that could result in an accident?

*Probably playing/running with a tool, accidentally cutting your hand with a saw (or any tool).

6. Produce a short list of “Safety Rules” that we could display in the workshop to remind us of safe working habits.

*Walk slowly

*Don’t run with tools

*Don’t disturb anyone well they are working or using a tool

*Listen to instructions

*Put the tools back in a safe place

7. Design a “Safety Poster” that could be displayed in the workshop.

*

Hi everyone, it's me Finau and welcome back to my blog! Today I went to my hard materials meet. It was fun because we started with a few jokes. We then moved onto our work and filled in a doc about safety in the work shop. I hope you have enjoyed this post. Please leave a positive comment on my blog. Bye!

Hard Materials Tech @ Tamaki

Hello everyone, it's me Finau and welcome back to my blog! Today I went to my Hard Materials meet. We first started with some jokes then moved onto some learning games. We were matching the tools with the correct name and kind of played pac man but with tools. After that we looked through this doc and drew a design on a wooden toy. It was super fun and I'm glad I went. I hope you have enjoyed this post. Please leave a positive comment on my blog. Bye!

Tech @ Tamaki Stem/Science

Hey everyone, it's me Finau and welcome back to my blog. Today was sadly my last session with Mrs Sharma for Stem/Science. I have enjoyed all the cool experiments we've done. For our last session we learnt about the 3 states of matter. We watched a video of what matter is and then we had to find 10 images (on google) of solid, liquid,&gas. After that we played a game of kahoot. It was very fun and exciting. Our runner up was Aye & Mariko, our 3rd place was Angelica, 2nd was me (:)), and of 1st place winner was Sophie. I hope you have enjoyed this post. Please leave a positive comment on my blog. Bye!

Tech @ Tamaki Stem/Science

Carefully read and understand this recording and planning guide so you are systematic in scientific thinking, experimenting, recording and interpreting.

Follow logically through each section so you are thorough in your science investigation steps.

Complete each section with details needed so you have carefully logged your project...and so an outsider can know and understand too.

1

My science investigation TOPIC:

2

My investigation question

the effect of different types of physical activity in heart rate

Which actions/activity resulted in the highest heart rate?

Lowest heart rate? Running on the spot as fast as you can (highest) and sitting (lowest).

Why do you think this might be? Sitting is where you relax and take a break and you don’t do anything but when you run you get very tired and your heart beats.

HYPOTHESIS

I think running as fast as possible on the spot is the highest heart rate. I think sitting is the lowest heart rate.

3

Background research and knowledge I will explore as a backdrop to my investigation

High Blood Pressure: 120mmHg

Low Blood Pressure: 80mmHg

4

Aim of my investigation

5

My investigation steps

Materials / resources / people:

STEP 1

We followed the instructions.

STEP 2

We had to get a smart watch and and stopwatch.

STEP 3

We did activities like jogging,running,throwing/catching,etc.

STEP 4

After every activity we checked out blood pressure to see if it was high or low.

STEP X

We wrote it down in this google doc.

Result:

I was right, (hypothesis). I ran on the spot and my blood pressure was the highest 167 and sitting down was the lowest 98.

Hi everyone, it's me Finau and welcome back to my blog. Today at tech we did a science investigation. We did some activities and check our heart rate. It was very fun to do. I worked with Aye and Mrs Sharma was our teacher (yay, she came back). I hope you have enjoyed this post. Please leave a positive comment on my blog. Bye!

Tech @ Tamaki Stem/Science

Task 1: Understand what pH is.
pH = potential of hydrogen

What is pH? pH is how acid is measured.

How do you measure pH? The pH value can be measured using electrochemical measuring systems, litmus paper, or indicators and colorimeters.

What is the scale of pH measured on? pH is a measure of how acidic/basic water is. The range goes from 0 - 14.

What pH level does water have? Is water acid, basic, or neutral? Neutral

What is the most acidic pH level? It is 0

What is the most basic pH level? It is 8-14

0-6 is acidic
7 is neutral
8-14 is basic

0 battery
1 stomach acid
2 lemon juice
3 grape juice
4 tomato juice
5 soft drinks
6 saliva/urine
7 pure water
8 sea water
9 baking soda
10 great salt lake
11 ammonia solution
12 soapy water
13 bleach
14 drain cleaner

Atom = simplest form of matter
Atom = neutral
More hydrogen ions - acid
Bases = have hydroxide ions

When things go into water they dissolve and become acids and lose 1 electron.

Task 2: Doing experiment

Aim/Purpose: Test the pH levels in different household products.

Equipment: Well Plate, pH strips/litmus paper,pH chart table (0-14),Dropper

Products: Baking soda, distilled water, window cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, lemon juice, milk, orange juice, apple juice, vinegar, detergent,tea/coffee
